Vertical Gardening is good only for small plants where their is no place for planting big plants. You can also able to grow some leafy vegetables including tomatoes. This all depends upon the stand and the plan that you made to utilize the space forever. I would suggest you to try small plants that can easily grow and profitable to you.

You can do vertical gardening for leafy plants (spinach, cabbages, lettuce, etc.), for fruit-bearing plants (tomatoes, cauliflower, etc.), or creepers (cucumber, beans, etc), however, vertical gardening is not appropriate for tuber plants. Hydroponics is ideal for vertical gardening.

Vertical garden is same as usual normal gardening, but in vertical you have to grow only small plants and climbing plants that are not enough wiegh. I would suggest you to choose some automation for watering so this can avoid dirty in and around areas. I am attaching somephotos which might help you in understanding how does this works.
