How often should mulch be replaced?
#1
I totally redid our front landscape 2 or 3 years ago. Should I remove some of the top mulch and replace it this year? The color is still very good and I have no weeds coming through.

If the mulch is too old, not a permanent, then you have to replace with the new one. You have said the current situation is good so wait for the day in applying new mulch. I hope you understood what I am saying.

The mulch is not for a garden but just landscape for aesthetics so I should still wait then?

Yep, wait for the time, then go ahead to do your job.

I would suggest every other year at most. Remove as much as possible and shoulder never be more then 3 inches long!

3 inches would be more bigger that is 76mm around. would suggest 1 or 2 inches will be enough.

We don't use mulch anymore but we used cedar chips awhile back. While it was more expensive, it was natural with no chemicals. What I'd do is top it off every year. After a few years, I'd remove the layers & put fresh down. See how well the mulch is doing. If you see more weeds coming through, mold, fungus growing in it, that's time to replace it.
If you want cheap mulch, get a hold of Tree Services. Some of them sell or even give away the mulch.

Unless you are using plastic mulch, I believe there is no need to replace the mulch. You can let the mulch decompose so that your plants can absorb nutrition. A better way to do this is by adding a new layer of mulch.

A great article on the different types of mulch for those who would like more options but not sure what may be out there.
What are the types of mulch you like to use? Did this article help?
