What happens when you keep throwing on compost and the soil level keeps rising? Or will the soil level drop when nutrients are being used up?

The soil level will generally rise over time because compost adds organic matter and bulk. However, it also slowly decomposes and settles. If you’re adding more than breaks down, you’ll see a gradual lift—great for building raised beds naturally, but avoid burying plant stems.

Nutrient use doesn’t significantly drop soil volume—it’s mostly organic matter breakdown that reduces level. Continuous heavy composting can raise the level, but balanced decomposition and plant uptake keep it fairly stable. Just monitor to avoid excess height near stems or structures.
